Why Belief Matters to Create a Fantastic Life
I came across this quote the other day. It rang true in my heart.
“Your success depends mainly upon what you think of yourself and whether you believe in yourself.”
William J. H. Boetcker
Belief is the essence of why this statement is so true. I’ve been studying the placebo research over the past decade and the results are, in a word, stunning. For years people have jokingly referred to something being a “placebo” as though that made it a joke. In fact the power of placebo is not in the sugar pill we take, it’s in the power of what we BELIEVE we’re taking. Time and time again it has been proven that taking something you believe will help you have less pain or more health will actually deliver those results — and at a level scientists are still grappling to fully understand. Researchers have begun to identify the brain centers and neurochemicals which get triggered when we believe something is true. If we hold certain beliefs around our own health and healing, specific physiological processes are set in motion.
Belief is not only about what we ingest, say researchers. It’s what we believe in the messages we hear every day from bosses, spouses, colleagues and friends, and especially — ourselves. Yes belief my friends…. one of the most powerful tools we have to use to our advantage.
In my recovery from a couple life-threatening conditions, and now finding myself at the highest level of health and fitness i’ve had in about 30 years, I know my own belief in my power to recover and eventually thrive again was paramount. Yes i had to put in the work to exercise and eat right and hold positive thoughts and feelings as much as possible. But fundamental was the fact I BELIEVED doing all those things would make a significant difference to my health and well-being. Particularly as I recovered after double hip replacement no one imagined I could become again as flexible and strong in my hips and thighs again as I have become. I am dancing again at a level I have not enjoyed since I was 25. Now I have indestructible titanium hips! (Watch out Dancing with the Stars!) I believed dancing and being fit and strong were not only possible but achievable, and so it has come to pass.
Believe in yourself…. your talents, your capacities, your innate desire to grow and help others and to live a fulfilling meaningful life.
Belief is a powerful catalyst for good in our lives. Use it well friends.
